Dave & Kaitlin's Evening Engagement SessionKaitlin and Dave are getting married at a beautiful winery this year - I can't wait for photos around the property and in the 'barrel room'. These are their engagement pics... they were taken in the country between Kitchener and Cambridge, right around sunset. Both Kaitlin and Dave claim to fear the camera, but you'd never know it the way the photos turned out. I love the lonely country feel of the setting mixed with the warmth you feel around these two.
Eitan Gallant's Spoken WordHillside Festival is a beauty little event just north of Guelph. It's been happening annually for 31 years. It features amazing musical talent and amazing food. I go for the weekend with friends whenever I can.
This year my buddy Eitan asked me photograph his spoken word set. He was accompanied by Luke Nares on guitar and vocals and Josee Wilson on vocals. An Evening In (or at least very near to) Waterloo, with Allison & RossAllison and Ross wanted some sunset pics for their engagement photos. We started off the evening walking in Laurel Creek Conservation Area, but couldn't get 'the' sunset shot we were looking for. So we abandoned ship and drove out of town. Down a side road I spied a field of fresh cut hay that had a great look at the evening sky. I love how the photos turned out. Looking forward to the wedding in January at Whistle Bear in Cambridge! and now come the sunset shots... take a look at more engagement sessions?
A Casual Family Photo SessionI spent an afternoon with Baby Leo and his proud parents Matt and Meaghan at their home in Kitchener. They wanted to keep the photos very casual, which suited me just fine. I think the photos came out with a nice feel - happy, gentle, relaxed and fun. These are a few favourites. The chubby cheeks made it into a lot of photos. I even got one full-on smile. Sometimes awesome photos happen in the midst of trying to take a different photo (like trying to make the dog sit facing the right direction). I like making space for that to happen :) Leo wore this awesome lion shirt. I tried to get him to roar at me, but he was so good the whole time - sleeping and giving me big stares. Then he roared at the end of the session.
Steph & Chad's Muskoka Wedding at Deerhurst and Grandview ResortsSteph and Chad got married in beautiful Hunstville, Ontario. Photos were taken at Grandview Resort and Deerhurst Resort, both just outside town. The ceremony was in a screened porch that was bright but covered, breezy but not windy - a lovely space for a wedding.
The weather was perfect, the timing impeccable (Steph is a master planner) and the wedding party was stunning. These are some of my favourite photos from the day. a mini-lifestyle session with Maddie and Dave & Jenn... (and their pug Little Man)I love informality... relaxed times, that sort of thing. I try to bring that vibe to my photo work, as much as I can. It's hard sometimes (weddings can be particularly busy), but on this holiday Monday, Dave & Jenn and Maddie (their 6 month old daughter) had all the time in the world. So we went slow, let Maddie do her thing and wound up with some pretty memorable shots. Dave and Jenn included a few looks that reflect their lifestyle - Jenn's running shoes, Little Man, Dave's favourite board game and Maddie playing with some of their tennis gear. (i couldn't squeak the tennis shots, cute as they were, into the preview... sorry!). Adding Maddie to a pair of shoes or a table game somehow makes an instantly memorable photo... I love it. The full session includes 80+ images... these are some of my favourites. Then there was Little Man, the pug. He made it into so many shots that he almost generated enough material for his own session. Here are a few favourites featuring the (second) star of the show :) and to settle a small disagreement on facebook... I believe this photo is a 'checkmate' face from Dave and an 'oh no!' from Maddie... but maybe you see it differently??
A Walk in Victoria Park with Ash, Matty and SebastianI love natural photos... you know, walking, exploring, playing, that sort of thing. When Matt and Ash asked me to do family photos with them and Seb (their one-year-old son), I was happy to hear that park exploration was the plan. The tulips were out at Vic Park in Kitchener and they made an amazing backdrop for the photos. Here's a sampling from the session... check out Seb's Christmas photos from last December...
Family Photos with Angie & Jay and the kidsAngie has this amazing old window that she's turning into the most beautiful frame for a series of family pics. The frame is great, but currently sits very, very empty. She asked me to take a walk with the family and get some updated photos... so out we went. These are a few of my favourites from our session.
Family Photos with Jennie, Mike and twins Milo & FinnBabies sleep a lot... not necessarily at the times you want them to, but they do sleep a lot. Parents of babies? Not nearly so much sleeping, so you need to nap when you can. I love this shot of Mike taking a few minutes while the boys did the same. Mike and Jennie's twin boys (Milo and Finn) were early arriving to the world and had to spend some time at the NICU getting ready to come home. So they weren't quite newborn when I visited, but they were still tiny... around five-and-a-half pounds each at the time. They look so cute together in the photos. Mike and Jennie were beaming the whole time So was Zeus... Milo & Finn and Mike & Jennie and I had a really fun time making these photos. I think they reflect the vibe that is Casa Boylan. I hope you all dig 'em.
The (mostly) Empty Apartment, with Keanan and Ashleigh...... the apartment is recently rented, barely furnished and the box that the kitchen table came in is still on the living room floor. The kitchen has a few old beer bottles (courtesy of the movers-out) and salt and pepper shakers that hug. Not much else to the place except a couch the last tenants left and some Christmas lights, so we did what we could. It turned out smashing. Keanan and Ashleigh are two peas in a pod. You can just tell that they'll have the place filled with happiness (and hopefully some furniture) in no time! Here are a few highlights from the rest of the session...
It looks good both ways...2014 will be a banner year here at ZJP. With nine wedding assignments already booked and lots of little ones set to arrive, there will be lots to do, lots to see. Stopping time with an image is a remarkable thing... throw in some momentous occasions, thrilling emotions and maybe some leaves or snow and there's going to be a lot of good fun coming up. But last year was awesome too! So without further ado... here are some memorable photos from this past year. Enjoy! This last one is a shot from a wedding I photographed at Langdon Hall in the late summer. They had lights on one of the apple trees in the orchard and we snuck out for a few quick photos after supper. This was the first frame I shot.
I felt the magic of it right away, as soon as I saw it. Hope you feel it too. Happy 2014! Zac I went for a snowy winter walk to take some family photos...... and it was hilarious and awesome. Kaleena had me out to snag some family photos for her dad's birthday. It was really snowy out, which made for some cool photos (pun only sort-of intended). Some of the shots were of the guys, others of girls or sisters or siblings or couples. We mixed it up. Here's a sampling from the shoot, enjoy! Towards the end of the shoot we were even able to get a whole family photo with the newest member of the family, snugly wrapped though she was...
I headed out to a great little spot in Waterloo for a casual family photo session with the Hill Family...Amelia was a tad shy to start off with (who isn't really though), but all that changed when she got a cat tail in her hands. Suddenly that was her world and the photos started to come naturally. When she figured out that the fluff could fly... oh man! That's when the smiles started happening. This photo took the cake, but we had lots more great moments as we walked and talked, sat down and giggled. Here are a few favourites from the day.
Kaitlyn & Kyle and I headed out for a walk thru Riverside Park in Guelph...... it was a brisk fall day just a few days after the clocks 'fall back'. Sunset came early and we were able to get some nice washy end of the day lighting. Here's what I mean: The photos of K&K relaxing in this tree were my favourite part of the session. After the tree, we sat on benches, startled some geese, walked along the water and then took the tracks home. Here's a sampling of the rest of the photos.
Really looking forward to the wedding in July! I headed out with Pam & Shawn and their three awesome kids for a walk in Waterloo Park...These folks were a lot of fun to photograph - the kids were full of energy and bursting with giggles. We explored, climbed, tossed leaves and took some photos along the way. I love the photos that came out of this shoot- all sorts of great shots I thought. But there's one photo in particular that completely blew me away. I think it's one of the best photos I've taken. What do you think? But like I said, I loved this shoot. There were no shortage of great moments frozen forever by the click of a shutter. Here is a sampling of my favourites from the day!
The afternoon had a chill in the air that disappeared when the sun came out..We took a walk through historic downtown St Jacobs, taking in both the town and the picturesque river that runs along its north edge. The session had lots of great moments and expressions - really excited for the wedding in June!
A Rainy and Wonderful Walking Photo Session with Mike and PaulaPaula and Mike dig downtown Kitch. They live downtown, Mike works downtown and Paula is involved with Engage - a program that promotes community development.
We threw around a few ideas for photos, but kept coming back to a downtown walk. I'm glad we stuck with it. Despite clouds that seemed intent on drizzling, we had a great time wandering around. After we finished up the photos, we stopped at IMBIBE for pints (and a few more photos). Here are a few favourites from the day: I spent an afternoon with the Thompson Family in Victoria ParkThis was an epic gathering. Graham and Melissa Thompson had flown in from their home near Calgary for a visit with Graham's mom and sister and his sister's family. So we had Grandma, plus two couples with three kids apiece. It made for a wonderfully chaotic time playing, running, tossing leaves and laughing at all the antics. Here are some of my favourite shots from the day: Grandma was right in on all the action... I love this shot of her and all the kids putting on their best crazy faces!
I took a visit out to see Heidi, Dave and Levi at their family property...... and it was a perfect fall day. The sun was out, the air was pleasant and the leaves were a mash of stunning reds and oranges. We took a walk around Dave's parents' place and got great photos all the way through - in the yard, in the forest and at the family cabin at the back of the property.
The little man was a champ the whole time! He gave the camera one great look after another. Here's some of the best of the day: My second time photographing Layla was just as fun as the first...She's a mover and a shaker this one! When she was just a few weeks old she was moving, moving. moving and this time was no different - lots of happy arms and rolling over. Every once in a while, Layla would stop and stare - and it's those photos that I found the most striking. Her eyes shine. Here's what I mean... I had a great afternoon with you guys! Enjoy the rest of the photos!
