Kevin and Rebekah's Big DayThis day - August 17 - was sunny and gorgeously warm after a stretch of unseasonably cool weather for August. I started off my day at a cottage near Rosseau where Rebekah and her bridesmaids were getting ready. Hair and make-up and breakfast were all in full swing. Texts were being sent and received as flowers and family members fluttered around. The place was buzzing with the drone of hair dryers as I got going. Rebekah's dress and jewellery, plus a few quick photos outside the cottage. The last shot is with Rebekah's niece, the flower girl. Kevin and Rebekah decided to meet up at Rosseau Lake College, a private school in the area that Rebekah's grandpa taught at a number of years ago. The property had endless opportunities for photo spots. Here are my favourites, including R&K's first look on the dock. We stopped in downtown Rosseau, which is comprised of the General Store plus a few others. There was a barn just down the street that made for another unique set of photos. The ceremony took place in an old church in small town a few minutes outside Rosseau proper. Afterwards, everyone headed back to Rosseau to a classy old hall that has stood for nearly 100 years in the town. The basement doubles as the town library. The food was excellent (compliments to the chef on the gravy and roast beef in particular) and the evening was full of laughs and tears, with the odd jab thrown in good fun. I feel pretty great on days like this one. Being there to see a groom face his bride for the first time is an experience that sticks with you. The same goes for seeing 'the kiss' or even something less obviously like noticing newlyweds play with their ring finger, checking the feel of the band unconsciously. I did my best to bring the vibe of the day to the photos. I hope that in looking at them you can feel the story of the day.
Thanks for having me out Kev n' Bek. All the best. We went out for a sunset shoot on the escarpment...... and uncorked some champagne to celebrate. Rebekah and Kevin were great in front of the camera - you can see their enthusiasm for each other in the pics. Here are some favourite shots from the day:
Wedding Photography in Kitchener, at Steckle Heritage FarmYou could feel the happiness and anticipation...... it was electric in the humid summer air. The historic farm provided a beautiful backdrop for the day - a ceremony in the apple orchard followed by supper and a party in the barn. I had an absolute blast photographing the day for Jess and Terry. There were laughs and tears, giggles and cheers. Here's some of the best of the day. Jess & Terry's Wedding Story:the barn at Steckle is an amazing reception venue....
Casual Family Photography in Kitchener...I've posted a few shots from this session already on Facebook, but I wanted to share a few more.
Mike and Eline's place was awash in bright summer sun when I arrived mid-morning. They had some very neat highbacked chairs that we used for part of the shoot. Though there were lots of great shots inside and out, a number of my favourites came on the chair. So without further ado... I've been doing regular work with RareRepublic.com and WaterlooRegionEats.com as a photojournalist. Both sites are about food... right up my alley. Here are links to a few recent articles I've worked on:
A quick little article on my backyard greens....http://www.waterlooregioneats.com/backyard-greens-its-like-printing-money/
Hope y'all enjoy it! Cheers! Free run vs Free Range vs Cage-free... ever wondered what it means? This article is an awesome interview with Melissa Baer from Vibrant Farms. She gives you all the details...
http://www.rarerepublic.com/features/eggs-free-run-or-free-range-2.html I went out to Barrie's Asparagus with Andrew from RR - here's the article!http://www.rarerepublic.com/features/asparagus.html
I had a great time on the shoot. Hope you enjoy the photos and maybe some seasonal produce too! Here's a look at how I frame my prints:Next time you have a beer at IMBIBE (a very cool restaurant in downtown Kitchener), you may find yourself staring at one of the TV's... or one of these photos, if you're on the other side of the table. I took these on my couch, so forgive the glare.
My friends' apartment has awesome light when the sun shines......so the last time that my daughter Tali and I went for a visit I packed my camera and snapped a dozen or so shots. Some of them came out really nice. Great light and a beautiful kid make it pretty easy ;)
I recently had one of my photos in a fundraiser for the KW Art Investment Fund - they put on an amazing event at the KW Art Gallery and......the evening raised several thousand dollars that will help establish a collection of local art. The photo shown below was my contribution. It was shot at night, on film, on a quiet country road outside Guelph, Ontario. The glow behind the barn is the city lights of Guelph, overexposed on the night sky. The photo has had no edits, colour alterations or digital touching. It looked great in the frame - a 12x18 print, in black frame with black matte. I spent last saturday finishing off some product photos for my good friends at << X TEA Co. >>The day was mostly spent shooting a few new blends of theirs (which are excellent by the way...), but my favourite photo was an impromptu shot of a piece of X TEA teaware. It's a double-walled, clear tea glass photographed exactly how I like - low light, natural light, no computer work done on it whatsoever. Here's the photo: Here are a few other favourites from the shoot: One of my chicken photos was recently selected for a story on eggs in a local publication!I spent the afternoon shooting chickens... (camera style of course) It was just me, my gear and a hundred or so laying hens and roosters... and I had a blast. I was out at Vibrant Farms taking shots of their chickens for an upcoming edition of RARE REPUBLIC, an online magazine dedicated to all things good food. Vibrant Farms does things the natural way - no GMO's in the feed, no antibiotics or hormones... I could go on, but this is about photos. Take me out for coffee and I'll chat you up about food. The birds at Vibrant are pastured in the warmer months, inside for the winter. The barn has some great south-facing windows that let in lots of natural light for the birds in the winter. The natural light gave the photos a nice vibe. I think this one is my favourite... (the roosters kept an eye on me) Here are a few more of my favourites from the day. The birds seemed to like hanging out around the windows - so I wound up with some cool shots of them basking in the sunshine or in little silhouetted groups. And the end product... lots of beautiful brown eggs! I spent a few hours bushwhacking around the hills in Powassan doing something I haven't done for a while - nature photos.I started off trying for some epic winter landscapes... and I got some decent shots, but it was the close up shots that kept catching my eye as I flipped through the photos afterwards. One of my favourites... These two shots were taken looking off the edge of a big bluff down into one of the many valleys in the area. It provided a cool backdrop for the up close shots - the snow falling away into nothing behind the details in the foreground. Hope y'all dig the photos! All the best over the holidays! I got to spend a lot of time involved in the creative design part of this shoot, which was a ton of fun. Here's my favourite shot from the day... I spent the day with Tony from X-TEA co. taking glamour shots of the 30+ varieties of loose leaf teas they carry. X-TEA is a great new business in downtown Kitchener that carries some of the best tea and teaware you can get your hands on. As I got into photographing the teas, the variety between the teas sort of surprised me... I wasn't expecting so much colour and texture. Many of the teas were very beautiful up close. The sets for the shoot were all pieced together by Tony and I using bits from some old Christmas basket arrangements and a number of artifacts and antiques supplied by two other X-TEA founders, Dave and Zenia. We had a blast trying to match the personality of the tea to the set. Here are a few of my favourite shots. This was a fantastic shoot... I had a great deal of fun and X-TEA wound up with some really cool photographs of their teas and teaware. You can find a link to them through my Facebook Page if you're interested. As a footnote, I'll add that all of these photos were shot with available light and that none of them have had any work done on them - every single one is straight out of the camera. No crops, colour corrects, brightens, darkens or sharpens. Long live the camera! This was a nice casual shoot at home and at the park down the road... we managed to catch Zoe along with mom and dad doing some of everyone's favourite things - playing at the park, on the swings, some family reading time and listening to U2! (purported to be the world's best band by someone who may or may not be pictured here)
I went out for a bike ride (the weather was gorgeous) tonight and brought my camera along in case something caught my eye. On the way home I spotted this cool stained glass window and rattled off a few frames. The effect created in each photo is made by zooming while the photo exposes. Other than some cropping, these photos have not had any digital edits, colour manipulations or effects applied - they are exactly as shot.
The second photo was taken in such a way that the 'zoom' effect created a double image - two images of the same face, differently sized. What I didn't notice until after I took the photo was that the smaller face was positioned exactly in the hands of the larger person... creepy! Wasn't sure about the weather leading up to this shoot, but the sun came out at the right time and we got some great shots. Can't wait for the wedding next summer!
